Mathern, Carl
(1887-1960)
   Playwright. Mathern was a newspaper staff writer in Frankfurt am Main in 1914 when he met actor Toni Impekoven. They began collaborating on comic skits and one-act comedies, and in 1918 they completed their first full-length comedy. By 1920 they had become a playwriting duo second in popularity only to Franz Arnold and Ernst Bach. Mathern gave up regular journalistic employment in 1930 and lived on his abundant royalties, remaining in Frankfurt am Main through the Third Reich and continuing to write for the next 30 years, though he never again achieved the success he had enjoyed with Impekoven.
